Tomato: maintenance tips

A popular vegetable garden fruit, the tomato is available in a wide range of cultivars. Easy to care for, the plant produces a multitude of colourful fruits.

Full sun, with 6 to 8 hours of sunshine a day.

Water regularly, avoid wetting foliage.

Planting

Plant when there is no risk of frost, in humus-rich, well-drained soil. Depending on the species, it may be possible to plant in a container with vegetable garden potting soil.

Fertilization

Fertilize at planting with granular fertilizer. During the summer, fertilize with water-soluble or liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks.

Tomatoes should be picked when ripe, as soon as they reach their final colour, which ranges from pink to bright red, yellow or orange, depending on the variety.
